I originally posted this back in January of 2009 and thought I would post it again for those who might have missed it or forgot about it.

My kids love yogurt, we all do. I was reading Stephanie’s blog on how she did it in the crock pot and knew I had to give it a try. I am so glad I did.

All you need is 8 cups of milk and 1/2 cup store bought yogurt for your starter, your crockpot and a thick towel for insulation. After the first batch you can use your own homemade yogurt as a starter for your next batch.

Add 8 cups milk to your crock pot and cook on low for 2 1/2 hours. After 2 1/2 hours turn the crock pot off and unplug. Leave covered. When three more hours have gone past take two cups of milk out of the crock pot and combine with your 1/2 cup of starter and mix well. Add it all back to the crock pot and mix well again. Leave the lid on and crock pot unplugged and wrap a thick towel around to insulate it. After 8 hours have gone by your yogurt will be ready.

Add fresh or frozen fruit and enjoy. I also added a few teaspoons of sugar free honey to mine. Stephanie suggest not to add the fruit until you are ready to eat it as the consistency will change.

Your homemade yogurt will keep up to7-10 days in the fridge, but you can freeze your starter.

You can also strain your finished yogurt in cheese cloth to remove the whey and have it more like Greek yogurt.
